An Israeli Researcher Has Come Up With Affordable Solar Energy Technology
Chan
And in the midst of Israel’s Negev desert, a researcher is building an affordable solar energy system. Our Israeli correspondent went to meet him.
Professor David Faiman is a dedicated solar energy researcher.
He has invented an affordable energy collecting system. The size of the photovoltaic cells are two thousand times smaller than the conventional systems.
The sun rays are collected from a glass dish onto the cells.

[Prof. David Faiman, Solar Energy Researcher]:
“If a single cell, just 4 inches by 4 inches is to provide electricity, then the main cost for the system is the dish itself, and since the dishes are made out of metal and glass, which are conventional materials, in terms of dollars per volt it’s a lot cheaper than conventional photo voltaic.”
In theory, this is a technological breakthrough. It is cheaper than coal-fired, nuclear or even hydro-electric plants. Another benefit is that it’s use and production creates no pollution. The dishes used for the research are 200 square meters, but Prof. Faiman explained that the size can be reduced for domestic use.
“You can place it in the garden of your house or possibly on the roof, if it is a flat roof. And that would provide most of the energy requirements for a conventional household.”
Prof. Faiman shares with us his hopes for the future generations.
[Prof. David Faiman, solar energy Researcher]:
“I hope that the situation with my grandchildren would be that one day they will talk with their parents and ask them: is it true that once people didn’t use solar energy to generate electricity?”
Professor Faiman also believes that if we find a cheaper way to store and transport electricity, the Sahara desert could become Europe’s “power plant” station.

I may consider purchasing solar panels for my house, but I would like some answers or ideas from Yahoo! Contributors.

How much would one approximately pay for solar panels for a house?

There are some websites out there that give you good calculators to approximate the costs. I have referenced them below.

From what I have read it sounds like $9/kW.
Remember you are not just having to install solar panels but inverters and batteries too.

Environment consciousness has been growing steadily all over the world and different industries are taking steps to decrease their dependency on the fast-depleting fossil fuel reserves. Steps are also taken to decrease the harmful emissions especially those from cars.

Automotive companies are also developing ways to further clean the emissions produced by their cars and not only to comply with government standards but to also help protect the environment. Different alternative sources of energy or fuel is being studied. Volvo is one of these companies which have taken steps to help in saving the environment from destruction. Their FlexiFuel system that is already used in three of their car models and such a system allows a vehicle to use bio ethanol for fuel. This is indeed showing their dedication not only in producing safe cars but clean cars as well.

Volvo’s studies on renewable and cleaner fuels do not start and end with their development and subsequent employment of their FlexiFuel system. The company announced that they are investing in Chemrec AB. This Swedish company has developed a technology in producing synthesis gas which is an important component in the production of various types of alternative fuels. The technology that Chemrec has developed is the first step in extracting alternative fuels from biomass. This renewable source of energy if further developed will help not only the company but the whole industry to lower its dependency on fossil fuels. The study in this field has been underway for more than fifteen years and this breakthrough brings the company closer to producing alternative fuels that will have less damaging effects on the environment compared to currently employed fossil fuel based products.

With the development of the technology to extract synthesis gases from biomass, Chemrec has shown that there is an efficient process in converting biomass into renewable fuels. Their chosen biomass is black liquor which is a residual product from the pulp industry. The common practice to recover the chemicals from this waste is to burn it up on soda furnaces. However, a disadvantage of this is that the recovered chemicals have a low efficiency rating.

But Chemrec has developed a technology that instead gasifies the black liquor from which comes out different by-products including synthesis gas which has a higher efficiency rating. From this, alternative fuels can be extracted with already developed techniques to get vehicle fuels such as bio-diesel, hydrogen gas, synthetic diesel and DME which are all cleaner burning fuels compared to pure gasoline or diesel.

The investment of Volvo on the Swedish company does not mean though that the company has a plan to become a fuel supplier, but they are working on ways to utilize the technology in the development of newer and cleaner engines. This move on the part of the Volvo group shows its dedication to not only protect its consumers via their safe cars but also help to protect the environment through the development of cleaner and renewable vehicle fuels. While this development cannot wipe away the world’s dependency on fossil fuels like a Volvo wiper blade can efficiently wipe raindrops from a windshield, but this is certainly a step forward in the right direction.

Whether this technology will be employed in the near future to replace the pure gasoline fuel employed by cars still remains to be seen. But with the dedication of Volvo to help in the development of new processes for the production of alternative fuels and companies such as Chemrec, a cleaner future is quite possible. A future that would see us not totally dependent on fossil fuels for our energy demand, while this may seem far off, the automotive industry is making a good step forward.

Finally, after six years of price hikes, fuel prices have begun to drop. But the average household still spends a huge amount on essential electricity, gas and water, so if you want to push your bills even lower and help the environment by cutting down your carbon emissions, then read on for few energy efficiency tips.

Have a shower

Swapping long soaks in the tub for quick refreshing showers uses 40 per cent less water, so if you have a water meter this will make a significant difference to your bills and help you to do your bit for water conservation, especially in the dry summer months.

If you don’t already have a water meter fitted at your home, get one installed so that you only pay for the water that you actually use. This will encourage you to keep an eye on the amount that you waste too.

Choose the right bulbs

The Government wants to start phasing out traditional light bulbs because of the amount of energy they waste. Using energy efficient ones not only saves on your electricity bill, they also last much longer so you won’t have to replace them as often.

Don’t just standby

Leaving appliances on standby rather than turning them off at the wall wastes so much electricity. Appliances can continue to use up to 70 per cent of their active energy while on standby, so think of the difference that you could make by just turning them off properly.

Leaving chargers on but unused is also a huge waste. You could be paying £10 a year for each charger you leave in, and when you add up your laptop, mobile phone, iPod and handheld home phone chargers, it really begins to add up.

Blow out the pilot

If you have an electric shower and cooker at home, you could turn off your gas pilot light once the weather is warm enough. Because while the pilot light is burning, your gas supply is constantly leaking away, even when your heating is off.

Cool it

Turning down you thermostat by just one degree centigrade can reduce your annual energy bill by 10 per cent. This is a difference that you’ll barely notice – until your bill comes in up to £49 a year cheaper.

Bleed your radiators

Trapped air inside your radiators makes them less efficient but bleeding them (releasing the air) is easy and makes them perform much better.

Wrap up warm

Insulating your home will save you loads on heating bills and will be an investment that will continue to save you money year after year. You can insulate your wall cavities, roof and windows and lag your boiler. All this can be a bit pricy but even simple things like hanging thick curtains and laying draft excluders at doors will make a difference.

Go A-grade

Whenever you need to buy a new fridge, freezer or boiler, always opt for an “A” rated one. These will save you money on you electricity bills as they’re cheaper to run and are also so much better for the environment.

Get technical

There are now a whole host of gadgets available to save the planet and your pocket at the same time. These range from washing powder replacements to gadgets that stop your fridge from over-working and wasting electricity. You can even get wind-up radios, water powered clocks and solar powered lights.

Switch your supplier

By moving to a new supplier you can save money on your bills by taking advantage of new-customer-only deals and sign up to a “green tariff” at the same time. Almost all providers now offer environmentally friendly deals so you could end up cutting your bills and investing in renewable energy sources at the same time.
